Tamu Kyi : Our Living Glossary
Language is the heartbeat of our culture. It carries our history, our values, and the wisdom of our ancestors from the mountains of Nepal to our community here in New York. We call this a 'Living Glossary' because our language is not a relic of the past; it is a breathing, evolving part of our daily lives. This collection is a work in progress, designed to grow as we add more terms and adapt to our journey in the diaspora.
Historically, the Gurung language has been passed down through generations more through oral tradition than written script. While experts have recently developed scripts such as 'Khema' and 'Khe Prih,' these have not yet reached a majority of our community for widespread use. This glossary is dedicated to those who may have had little opportunity to learn the language, as well as to those who wish to explore and contribute their own knowledge to this communal treasure.
To ensure accessibility, we will not be using the 'Khema' or 'Khe Prih' scripts here. Instead, we use Devanagari or Romanized transliterations for easy reading. Please bear in mind that these written phonetic representations may not exactly match the native Gurung pronunciation. Furthermore, as there are multiple dialects across different regions of Nepal, some terminology may vary from what you are familiar with.

तमु क्यी : हाम्रो जीवन्त शब्दकोश
भाषा हाम्रो संस्कृतिको मुटु हो। यसले नेपालका पहाडहरूदेखि न्युयोर्कमा रहेको हाम्रो समुदायसम्म हाम्रो इतिहास, मूल्य-मान्यता र पुर्खाहरूको ज्ञानलाई बोकेर ल्याएको छ। हामी यसलाई 'जीवन्त शब्दकोश' भन्छौँ किनभने हाम्रो भाषा विगतको अवशेष मात्र होइन; यो हाम्रो दैनिक जीवनको एक जीवन्त र विकासशील हिस्सा हो। यो संकलन एक निरन्तर प्रक्रिया हो, जसलाई नयाँ शब्दहरू थप्दै र डायस्पोरा (प्रवास) को हाम्रो यात्रा अनुसार विस्तार गर्दै लैजाने लक्ष्य राखिएको छ।
ऐतिहासिक रूपमा, गुरुङ भाषा लिखित लिपिभन्दा बढी मौखिक परम्पराका माध्यमबाट एक पुस्ताबाट अर्को पुस्तामा हस्तान्तरण हुँदै आएको छ। यद्यपि विशेषज्ञहरूले हालैका वर्षहरूमा 'खेमा' र 'खे प्रि' जस्ता लिपिहरू विकास गरेका छन्, तर यी लिपिहरू अझै पनि हाम्रो समुदायको ठुलो हिस्सामा व्यापक रूपमा प्रयोगमा आइसकेका छैनन्। यो शब्दकोश ती व्यक्तिहरूका लागि समर्पित छ जसले मातृभाषा सिक्ने अवसर कम पाएका छन्, र उनीहरूका लागि पनि जो यस सामुदायिक खजानामा आफ्नो ज्ञान अन्वेषण गर्न र योगदान दिन चाहन्छन्।
पहुँचलाई सहज बनाउनका लागि, हामीले यहाँ 'खेमा' वा 'खे प्रि' लिपिहरू प्रयोग गरेका छैनौँ। यसको सट्टा, हामीले पढ्न सजिलो होस् भनेर देवनागरी र रोमन लिपि (अङ्ग्रेजी अक्षर) प्रयोग गरेका छौँ। कृपया ध्यान दिनुहोला कि यी लिखित रूपहरू वास्तविक गुरुङ उच्चारणसँग पूर्ण रूपमा मेल नखान सक्छन्। साथै, नेपालका विभिन्न क्षेत्रहरूमा गुरुङ भाषाका धेरै लवज वा भाषिका (dialects) भएकाले, यहाँ प्रस्तुत गरिएका शब्दहरू तपाईँले प्रयोग गर्ने शब्दभन्दा केही फरक हुन सक्छन्।
हाम्रो भाषा तपाईँहरू मार्फत नै जीवित रहन्छ। तपाईँले बोल्ने प्रत्येक शब्द र बाँड्नुहुने प्रत्येक शब्दावलीले न्युयोर्कको मुटुमा हाम्रो तमु पहिचानलाई जीवन्त राख्न मद्दत गर्दछ। चाहे तपाईँ धाराप्रवाह बोल्न सक्ने हुनुहोस् वा आफ्नो जरासँग पुन: जोडिन चाहने युवा पुस्ता, हामी तपाईँलाई यो अभियानमा अन्वेषण गर्न, सिक्न र हामीसँगै अघि बढ्न हार्दिक निमन्त्रणा गर्दछौँ।
